My Big Fat Greek Getaway

A successful birthday trip to Malta last year allowed me to have a new attitude on how I should observe my birthday. My 27th birthday was looming and it was time to seek out a destination  in a bid to mollycoddle myself a bit more than usual.

Quick geography lesson: Chania is the second largest city of Crete. Crete is Greece’s largest island.

I did a quick Google image perusing, once the suggestion was made to ensure it ticked my boxes of requirement for a truly indulgent adventure this helped to turn any prior hesitation into earnest anticipation.

Up up and away

Day 1

My flight landed at 6am, a 20 minutes drive from the airport, saw me in Marathi where my apartment was located. I slowly opened my sleepy eyes and there it was… the view! Instantly my brain emptied itself of any work stress I had accidentally carried in my holdall…. I knew I was in for a real treat in Crete

Day 2: Elafonissi blew my mind

An early start saw us pack a day bag to do a 2hour drive to what has been voted the second best beaches in Europe. It was evident even before we arrived why it has been ranked highly.

The drive to Elafonissi opened up bendy roads that snaked up mini mountains

We did something both stupid and daring, left our bags on our sun lounger and drove 15minutes away fro the beach to find the most beautiful view to have lunch

To end the day we drove to Platanias which is considered the best place to party in Crete. And just before we hit the bars, we decided on somewhere to have some food. We happened to stumble upon Symposium which was rated the number 1 place on Tripadvisor to eat in the area.

On the drive back to our apartment we decided to try a restaurant near the apartments. Undoubtedly we had made another great decision.

Sunset Chania

Would I recommend Chania? I say “yes yes yes” for the following reasons; beautiful island, breathtaking beaches, friendly locals and food to satisfy even the most gluttonous. Thank you Abe, for the superb idea of suggesting Chania and driving us around and ensuring our safety and most importantly, making my first Greek experience both memorable and fun.

Remember to always live selflessly xoxo
